1. General information
The subject will allow the acquisition of certain basic photographic knowledge as well as clinical management when taking extraoral and intraoral photographs to achieve optimal quality in photography.
The objectives will be:
1. To acquire and improve the technical basis of photography.
2. To become familiar with the handling of the photographic camera.
2. To practically apply these basics in dental photography.
3. To achieve maximum quality in the results.
These approaches are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda of United Nations, specifically, the planned learning activities will contribute to the achievement of Goal 3, Health and Wellbeing (http://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/).
2. Learning results
In order to pass this subject, the student must show the following results:
1. -Differentiate between different types of cameras, their characteristics and operation
2. -Adequately photograph the patient at the extraoral level.
3. -Take quality intraoral photos, taking into account the different possible angles to capture the most information and detail in the same snapshot.
4. -Use the various accessories such as intraoral mirrors, spacers or contrastors in a clean, efficient and painless way for the patient
5. -Archive, view and record the photographs taken on different digital supports.
6. -Proper handling of photo editing programs for an adequate presentation.

Program
- History of photography
- Basic concepts of photography:
1. Focus, exposure and framing
2. Shutter speed
3. Diaphragm
4. ISO
5. Depth of field
6. Focal length
- Elements of a camera and operation:
1. Body: Shutter, viewfinder, sensor...
2. Objective: Diaphragm. Types: Telephoto, macro, wide-angle, zoom
3. Flash: Annular or twin.
4. Filters.
- Dental photography:
1. Intraoral
2. Extraoral.
Practical contents:
Setting up the equipment for use, effectively capturing images, making photographic series and editing images.
4. Academic activities
The learning process that has been designed for the subject is based on the following:
- Theoretical classes (6h)
- Clinical practices in photography (24h)
- Scheduled learning activities.
The program offered to the student to achieve the expected results comprises the following activities: Theoretical contents:
1. Basic concepts of photography
2. Specific concepts of dental photography
3. Extraoral and intraoral photography from the different types of view of the different specialties
Practical contents:
1. Basic handling of photographic equipment.
2. Digital dental photography in the clinic.
3. Photo editing.
5. Assessment system
The student must show that they has achieved the intended learning results through the following assessment activities:
- Objective test of theoretical knowledge by means of a written exam with 20 test questions + 5 possible reserve questions . This would correspond to 40% of the final grade.
- Completion of an individual practical dossier with the development of a clinical case: This part would correspond to 60% of the final grade.
Attendance to theoretical and practical classes is mandatory.
The evaluation of the students will be carried out on a continuous basis. Students will work in groups in order to better understand the handling of dental photography in a similar environment to the dental clinic.
